Learning how to use tracking in Final Cut Pro X

Applying tracking to the video is a great way to capture the viewer's attention on a certain object in the footage. This method allows you to fit the pattern smoothly, and amaze your audience with a fantastic artwork!

Keep in mind

Tracking is an automated feature of Final Cut Pro X, which requires the program to identify the object in the video correctly. For this purpose, it is better to use videos where the camera movements are smooth, and the object does not go outside the frame.

Let's begin!

Step 1

To start, you need to upload the video to the timeline, as shown in the picture.

Step 2

Select the video, and to the right side of it in the menu you will see a "Trackers" graph, so click the "+".

Step 3

As the mask appears (see Figure 1), you need to fit it to the object (Figure 2).

Step 4

Once you fitted the mask to the object, click on the "Analyze" button (located in the upper left corner of the video). Now the mask will be linked to the object.

Step 5

Attach the template over the video and click on it.

Step 6

Click on the "Transform" button in the lower left corner, as shown in the picture.

Step 7

As the menu appears at the top, select the "Object Track" option.

Excellent! The template now follows the object in the video.
